If I Have Not Love

If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and give over my body to hardship that I may boast, but do not have love, I gain nothing.

~1 Corinthians 13

Why is it that in the midst of all the chaos in this world we somehow always seem to forget this passage of scripture?

I mean think about it, we can have the best of intentions for something but if it’s not done out of love then it just never seems to turn out right. These three verses from 1 Corinthians have really been on my heart lately. I’ve come to realize that no matter what I do or how good I do it, if I don’t have love in my heart while doing it then it’s all for nothing.

As a body of Christ, we are called to arise and to go out into the world and proclaim the gospel. But what if the broken aren’t getting healed, the sins of past mistakes aren’t being made clean, or the true heart of God is being taught but only to be turned around to batter and judge another for their mistakes, burdens, sins, or shame? Where is the love in that? We as Christians have a responsibility under God’s law to love thy neighbor as yourself. Notice the period. The Bible does not say to love thy neighbor if they are nice to you, if they’ve never done you wrong, if they are not sinners, or if there is no bad blood. It simply states to love thy neighbor as yourself. What if we were to truly live like this? Can you imagine how many relationships would be restored and lives would be transformed?

We are all human and we all fall short of the glory of God every single day. But we have to try and pursue love in all that we do, even if we fail, because without love we are just a mere resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. It’s time to rise up and truly love one another through the good, the bad, and the outright ugly. Because every single person has baggage, mistakes, sins, and past regrets, but they still are deserving of love no matter what their past is or who they are.

There’s a song by For King and Country that says,

“When it's all said and done When we sing our final song Only love remains Only love remains

Let my life be the proof, The proof of Your love Let my love look like You and what You're made of How You lived, how You died Love is sacrifice So let my life be the proof, The proof of Your love”

Shouldn’t this be our goal as a body of Christ? In order for people to witness God through us we have to have love. Love and salvation is the only ingredients that have the power to change, mend, and transform lives and relationships. It doesn’t matter where you came from, what you’ve done, or are going to do; God’s love in people and through people is what heals the bruised and broken-hearted and in that we can rejoice.
